CRAFTS OF NAGALAND - PEREN

    Peren

Peren is rich in natural beauty and cultural expression. In areas nearby Inbung village, one finds a rare tradition of black cotton hand-spun fabrics, mostly woven by elderly women a practice now slowly fading with time. There are also accounts of indigenous dyeing traditions, where indigo-based natural dyes were once cultivated and used locally, pointing to a deep understanding of plants and sustainable practices in Peren areas.

Artisans create objects that are both functional and symbolic, shaped by a way of life that values simplicity and sustainability. The forests and landscapes of Peren continue to influence its craft traditions, keeping them deeply connected to place and identity.

The region holds a wealth of untapped skill, with artisans carrying generations of knowledge that remain largely unseen beyond their communities. At the same time, the essence of village life that nurtures these practices is gradually diminishing, making it all the more important to recognise and support these traditions.

Runway Nagaland has also worked in promoting banana fibre, further exploring the potential of natural materials into meaningful, contemporary applications.
